Wilderness Camping.

Wilderness Camping is about being close to nature and relying on our knowledge of the natural world. This is our complete Wilderness Camping collection.

Ten Days in Algonquin Provincial Park

Every year I try to get out and do a larger back country canoe trip. This year I decided to spend a little extra time in Algonquin Park. I wanted to take advantage of the high water levels and paddle the Tim River which is an area that normally becomes difficult later in the season due to low water levels and beaver dams. This wilderness canoe trip would challenge us through long days of paddling, portages, weather and wildlife encounters.

(Special thanks to Algonquin Basecamp for hooking us up with our second canoe!)

Algonquin Provincial Park Canoe Trips

Wilderness Camping in Algonquin Provincial Park is a great opportunity for people who live or are visiting Southern Ontario. Although Algonquin is not the largest Provincial Park in Ontario, it is the most established, with easy access points and numerous canoe routes to explore.

Three Day Canoe Trip to Islet Lake, Algonquin Park

On Thanksgiving weekend 2016, my friend Jesse and I canoed in to Islet Lake in Algonquin Park for the long weekend.

Three Day Wilderness Canoe Trip in Algonquin

Noah and I decided to get out for a few days to explore a new area of the park that we hadn't camped on before. Over three days, we travelled through Magnetewan Lake, Hambone Lake and Ralf Bice Lake in Algonquin Park. Although the weather didn't completely cooperate with us, it was a great trip.

Spring Canoe Trip in Algonquin

Derek and I headed out for a spring canoe camping trip in Algonquin Park. We would spend the weekend in the park and try our luck with a bit of trout fishing. This was our second time canoe tripping together, the last time was in the fall when we went into Queen Elizabeth Wildlands Provincial Park for a late season trip

Solo Canoe Trip in Algonquin - Islet Lake

I'm calling this Algonquin Park back country canoe trip the "Weed Wee Way Loop" named after the three small lakes and portage route that connect Islet Lake and McCraney Lake in Algonquin Park. The entire canoe route starts with Algonquin Park Access Point 4: Rain Lake, through Islet Lake, Weed Lake, Wee Lake, Way Lake, and McCraney Lake

The Weed - Wee - Way Loop

Its a very nice canoe route on the Western side of the park that I would say is suitable for intermediate level canoe trippers. It is a relatively easy route, except that there are a few beaver dams, areas with low water levels, and the area between Islet Lake and McCraney Lake (the Weed - Wee - Way lakes) are a less often travelled trail so for these reasons I would say not suitable for first time beginners.

The Bruce Peninsula.

The Bruce Peninsula Wilderness Camping Trips

WILD CAMPING - Alone on a Cliff and Frozen Lake

I decided to go out backpacking for a little solo overnight camping in the woods on the Bruce Peninsula.

Georgian Bay was still largely frozen with the ice sheet moving towards shore in large chunks of melting ice. After hiking alone on the cliff of the Niagara Escarpment I would make camp along the rocky shoreline.

Back on the Trail: Alone on the Bruce Peninsula

I headed back out for another solo hike of the Bruce Trail on the Bruce Peninsula, this time the section north of where I had camped previously.

Solo Kayak Trip - Alone Overnight on an Island

This was my first solo kayaking adventure of the year, and the first time I was taking my new boat out on an overnight trip. In fact, aside from a short test paddle the week before, this was the first time I had really been out in a kayak in almost 20 years!

I hope you enjoy this short wilderness canoe camping (trip-report style) video of our backcountry canoe trip in Magnetawan River Provincial Park.
