The overhand knot is a type of stopper knot. Although a simple knot, this knot is very important as a foundation knot and can be found within many other knots. It is a common knot that is probably the first knot everyone learns.

Overhand Knot Tying Instructions 

  1. First, place the tail end over itself to form a loop.
  2. Then pass the tail end down through the loop.
  3. Finish by snugging it up tight.

Although the overhand knot is easily tied and can be relied on as a stopper knot, it's also easily untied when its time to pack up and store your rope or cordage.

The overhand knot is a basic knot and should be on everyone's list of knots to know and be able to identify.
